Stop Wasting Power: Why You Need to Plug Your Movement Energy Leaks
Most athletes spend their entire career chasing perfection in a static position. They worry about the angle of their knee or the height of their elbow. Meanwhile, they are bleeding power from every pore.
In my book, Sh!t About Movement You Should Know, I frame movement as a holistic system governed by five pillars: Breathing, Opposition, Connection, Grounding, and Transitions. Today, let's talk about movement energy leaks and the first pillar: Breathing.
What Are Movement Energy Leaks?
Energy leaks are the hidden inefficiencies in your kinetic chain. If your nervous system is in a state of high-alert chaos, you aren't transferring force: you're absorbing it, wasting it, and eventually breaking down.
Think of it like a hose with holes in it. You can turn the faucet up as high as you want, but if the hose is punctured, the water never reaches the nozzle at full pressure. Your body works the same way. You can get stronger, faster, and more explosive, but if you have energy leaks, that power never reaches its destination.
We've seen athletes who adopt these principles slash their time on the IL by 15x, pick up 2-5 mph in velocity, and boost home run rates by 80%. It's not magic; it's physics.
The Five Pillars (Briefly)
The book introduces five pillars that every athlete, coach, and parent should understand:
- Breathing - The foundation of nervous system regulation
- Opposition - How your body creates force through opposing tensions
- Connection - How your segments communicate and coordinate
- Grounding - Your relationship with the ground and gravity
- Transitions - How you move between positions
Each pillar could fill a chapter. Today, we're going deep on just one: Breathing. Save the rest for the book.
Why Breathing Is Pillar One
If you aren't breathing properly, you're sabotaging your nervous system before you even move. Most athletes use their neck and shoulders to breathe, which triggers a fight-or-flight response. You are essentially telling your body that it is under attack, which restricts your range of motion and creates instant movement energy leaks.
Your breath is the only autonomic function you can consciously control, and it has direct, immediate access to your nervous system state. When you breathe slowly and deeply, particularly extending the exhale, you stimulate the vagus nerve and activate the parasympathetic system. Heart rate drops. Muscle tension decreases. Rational thinking comes back online.
Two Breathing Drills to Try Today
The 4-7-8 Reset
Inhale through your nose for 4 seconds, hold for 7, and exhale through pursed lips for 8. This forces your vagus nerve to chill out. Use this before training to prime your nervous system for quality movement.
Lateral Rib Expansion
Place hands on your lower ribs. Breathe in, and push your ribs out against your hands. This is diaphragmatic breathing done correctly. If your shoulders rise instead of your ribs expanding laterally, you're breathing wrong. This is the foundation that everything else builds on.
The Stats Don't Lie
These aren't just concepts. The principles in the book have been tested at the highest levels of sport with measurable, documented outcomes:
- 15x fewer days on the Injured List (4 days vs. 50-day league average)
- 87% of pro clients spent zero days on the IL
- 2-5 mph velocity increase (48% of pitchers saw gains)
- 80% increase in home run rate for hitters
- 0 injuries all season (Angelo State D2 National Champs)
This is what happens when you stop leaking energy and start transferring force efficiently.
The Bottom Line
The most overlooked performance variable isn't strength, speed, or skill. It's the efficiency of your movement system. And that efficiency starts with your breath.
If you want to understand all five pillars and how they work together, pick up Sh!t About Movement You Should Know. It's the guide coaches, parents, and athletes have been desperately looking for to decode the complicated movement principles that the world's top trainers use.
